the plays in maida's life..

ok, so its been a really long time since i've posted, so you'd think i've got so much to post about. but really i've been doing the same thing forever so.. not too much to write about but i need to inform people of what i'm doing anyway!
so grease, rehearsals have been going late into the night. i havent been getting home til 930 every night rehearsing this freaking play.. its just that time where rehearsal is more for the techies and the actors need an audience.. yeah.. but the play opens in two weeks! and we start selling tickets to the public on monday the 3rd, so please contact me if youre interested in tickets! i hope you all are cuz its gonna be a really cute show.
tickets are 7$ in advance, but if you get a group of 10 tickets are 6$. they are 8$ at the door.
the show runs the 13, 14, 15, and 17. there will be a matinee on the 15.
the show will just be at my school, Brighton High School on bengal blv
if you have any questions please ask me :)
we will also be featured on channels 2 and 13 on november 10! so please watch the morning news that day and you'll see some grease!

then also i was chosen to be a director in my theater class for our directing unit. my play is called the empty chair. its about these kids in group therapy for substance abuse for ages 14-18. before the play started a kid in this group died of an overdose of drugs, and the play is about how his death impacted these young recovering substance abusers. its a very intense play! i love it! and i have a very good hard working cast. its a great learning experience for me. i'm not sure the specific day my play will be performing, but it'll either be on the 17, 18, or 19. i'll give more information if youre interested in watching it.

and thats pretty much maida's life as of now til the plays are over! again please let me know if you want tickets for grease and/or info on empty chair. thanks!

best weekend ever!!

ok so as you know i was in cedar city this weekend for shakespeare competition. i have gone all three years and it certainly ended with a bang!
day one, thursday oct2
we left for cedar city at 730 in the morning. we reached cedar city for lunch at about 1130 and had all you can eat pizza at the pizza factory. then we went and saw moonlight and magnolias at the randall theater. it was a comedy about the writing of the script of gone with the wind. hilarious! then we rehearsed our ensemble play, richard iii, at the adams theater (the theater resembling shakespeare's globe). we were going to compete on this stage and we were so excited!....until they told us that there was a 5 by 5 green square in the middle of the stage that was a trap door that we could not touch and white pillars everywhere that we could not touch. if we touched these things, we would be disqualified. we were distraught. we rehearsed trying to follow the rules and it was the worst run we ever did. it was a very scary moment for us..
then we stopped by our hotel to relaxe for an hour before we went to our second play at the randall theater, gaslight. it was a victorian thriller that kept us on the edge of our seats! it was so good! very well acted. i have a new dream role..a new crazy lady..they're the best..
day two, friday oct3
this was the day that our indiviual events would compete, as in my monologue as queen margarete. my first round didnt start until 445, so until then we; me and the other ie people, saw ensemble scenes from other divisions, ate, looked around the stores in the student center, and supported our techies in the tech olympics. then it was time for my first round. half of my class was in the room to support me. i was the third person to go and i felt very confident about it. after everyone had gone, our judge went through to give us critiques. my only negative comment was i should give the audience a chance to breathe i was so intense the whole time. second round my teacher was there to support me, i went third. every other girl that went in this round played cleopatra. i felt very confident about this round as well. my only negative comment was i should give the audience a chance to breathe. my third round i had the other half of my class there to support me. i went third. this judge was short and bubbly and she said her most recent scene was my scene and she played margarete as well. no pressure. even though she had a couple more negative notes for me, because she had just played my part, she gave me the most positive notes. overall i felt so good about my rounds and i felt i was good enough to place.
day three, saturday oct4
this was the day that we competed our ensemble scenes and at the very end of the day the awards assembly. now we had the whole problem with the adams theater and our ensemble scene..but like an answer to a prayer it rained all that day and we performed in the centrum. we had a good warm up and got up to perform, we were good and focused, and we performed very well. we felt good about it. then we went to support our dance company, who was performing with sonnet 50. they did a beautiful job. afterward we went to the buses and changed out of our costumes and watched other people's ensemble scenes. then we recieved the news that our ensemble scene, my dear friend madeline's monologue, and my monologue were chosen to showcase to everyone at the assembly before the awards assembly. this means that at least one of the three judges thought our piece was unique and well acted and wanted everyone else to see it. this however doesnt mean we placed, just means the judges liked us. the showcase went very well, each one of us got a big applause. my voice cracked during my monologue..but i covered it so its all good. we had dinner then it was time for the awards assembly..
it started off with more pieces chosen to showcase, then a slide show. then the tech awards, we didnt recieve any from tech. then dance, we recieved second place for ensemble and for duo/trio. then they introduced the new catagory, visual art. we didnt turn in any so..no awards for that catagory. then acting.. brighton is in the oxford division so we had to wait while they went through other divisions. then oxford. the first thing they announced were monologues. i knew i was good enough to place so i was extremely nervous.. third place was from a different school.. second place was my friend madeline! i was so excited for her. and i thought since i wasnt third or second, that i just didnt place. i didnt want to consider first.. then after madeline's name was called, brighton stayed standing, and they turned to me, like they knew already. i just told them no and to sit back down.... then i heard, "first place mono act, oxford division, maida wadsworth." screams filled my ears, tears blurred my vision, and i couldnt believe it. it still feels like a dream. and i was in the middle of the row, so i had to get through my screaming classmates and make my way down the stairs to recieve my award. i grabbed my trophy and my certificate and a different certificate saying suu scholarship. i gave them my information and walked back up to my class. my friends chance and margot got third for their scene from much ado about nothing, and madeline also got the best junior award and she has the opportunity to go to an actors program at suu. we won first place ensemble, and first place sweepstakes. it was such a great year!!

remembering and understanding

i was ten during 9/11, and i remember every minute of that day. i was in 5th grade and i remember getting up for school and the tv was on and i saw the towers on fire. i didnt quite understand what was going on and the seriousness of it. i remember that i was having friend problems an i wanted to fit in with the popular girls, and that was all that was important to me at the time. then i remember going to school and watching the news most of the day. i remember my teacher crying and other teachers coming in the classroom in tears. i saw the clip of the towers falling so many times and it still get into my head what it meant. people explained it to me but i still didnt understand. i remember that the next day when we delivered the paper there was a big picture of the burning towers and my mom crying. i remember my teacher making us write papers on what happened and draw pictures and my picture was chosen to be published in this school paper about the events. with all that happened i didnt understand, i still dont fully understand. i dont think anyone does. i remember the thoughts and feelings that i felt after they had a more concrete number of deaths. i remember feeling sad and guilty and feeling i'd never understand the feelings going through those peoples families. i remember.. i'll always remember

grease is the word!

alrighty, small little update in the life of maida.
i've been a tad stressed lately, cuz of school and shakespeare and grease and seeing bryson once a week when i used to see him almost every other day and my two very good friends are going out so i've been the third wheel for some time.. but putting that aside, life is good.
so for my theater class we're doing Richard III for our ensemble scene and we're doing it in a 40's/nazi theme. it's really cool!! and it's kinda funny because i'm taking an american problems class and our first simulation is about totalitarian society.. so fun filled months ahead for me! and then also in my theater class we've got our individual scenes, and i'm doing a scene from Richard..again..(i did a scene from Richard last year too. and then thats our ensemble scene too..i guess i was meant to do this play..), and i'll be playing Queen Margaret. it's some intense stuff in our scene! i'm really excited! we might even go down to cedar city to compete :D
i am also in the fall musical. grease!! even though i'm not a fan of the story and the play itself, this show is SO much fun to be apart of! and i'll be playing the very first LuLu the pink lady!! Ati, my drama teacher, decided to add a new pink lady and i have the privilege of playing her! MY FIRST LEAD IN A MUSICAL!! its been such a blast! we're performing in november, fyi. i'll give more details when its closer.

i'm a princess too!
