ok so as you know i was in cedar city this weekend for shakespeare competition. i have gone all three years and it certainly ended with a bang!
day one, thursday oct2
we left for cedar city at 730 in the morning. we reached cedar city for lunch at about 1130 and had all you can eat pizza at the pizza factory. then we went and saw moonlight and magnolias at the randall theater. it was a comedy about the writing of the script of gone with the wind. hilarious! then we rehearsed our ensemble play, richard iii, at the adams theater (the theater resembling shakespeare's globe). we were going to compete on this stage and we were so excited!....until they told us that there was a 5 by 5 green square in the middle of the stage that was a trap door that we could not touch and white pillars everywhere that we could not touch. if we touched these things, we would be disqualified. we were distraught. we rehearsed trying to follow the rules and it was the worst run we ever did. it was a very scary moment for us..
then we stopped by our hotel to relaxe for an hour before we went to our second play at the randall theater, gaslight. it was a victorian thriller that kept us on the edge of our seats! it was so good! very well acted. i have a new dream role..a new crazy lady..they're the best..
day two, friday oct3
this was the day that our indiviual events would compete, as in my monologue as queen margarete. my first round didnt start until 445, so until then we; me and the other ie people, saw ensemble scenes from other divisions, ate, looked around the stores in the student center, and supported our techies in the tech olympics. then it was time for my first round. half of my class was in the room to support me. i was the third person to go and i felt very confident about it. after everyone had gone, our judge went through to give us critiques. my only negative comment was i should give the audience a chance to breathe i was so intense the whole time. second round my teacher was there to support me, i went third. every other girl that went in this round played cleopatra. i felt very confident about this round as well. my only negative comment was i should give the audience a chance to breathe. my third round i had the other half of my class there to support me. i went third. this judge was short and bubbly and she said her most recent scene was my scene and she played margarete as well. no pressure. even though she had a couple more negative notes for me, because she had just played my part, she gave me the most positive notes. overall i felt so good about my rounds and i felt i was good enough to place.
day three, saturday oct4
this was the day that we competed our ensemble scenes and at the very end of the day the awards assembly. now we had the whole problem with the adams theater and our ensemble scene..but like an answer to a prayer it rained all that day and we performed in the centrum. we had a good warm up and got up to perform, we were good and focused, and we performed very well. we felt good about it. then we went to support our dance company, who was performing with sonnet 50. they did a beautiful job. afterward we went to the buses and changed out of our costumes and watched other people's ensemble scenes. then we recieved the news that our ensemble scene, my dear friend madeline's monologue, and my monologue were chosen to showcase to everyone at the assembly before the awards assembly. this means that at least one of the three judges thought our piece was unique and well acted and wanted everyone else to see it. this however doesnt mean we placed, just means the judges liked us. the showcase went very well, each one of us got a big applause. my voice cracked during my monologue..but i covered it so its all good. we had dinner then it was time for the awards assembly..
it started off with more pieces chosen to showcase, then a slide show. then the tech awards, we didnt recieve any from tech. then dance, we recieved second place for ensemble and for duo/trio. then they introduced the new catagory, visual art. we didnt turn in any so..no awards for that catagory. then acting.. brighton is in the oxford division so we had to wait while they went through other divisions. then oxford. the first thing they announced were monologues. i knew i was good enough to place so i was extremely nervous.. third place was from a different school.. second place was my friend madeline! i was so excited for her. and i thought since i wasnt third or second, that i just didnt place. i didnt want to consider first.. then after madeline's name was called, brighton stayed standing, and they turned to me, like they knew already. i just told them no and to sit back down.... then i heard, "first place mono act, oxford division, maida wadsworth." screams filled my ears, tears blurred my vision, and i couldnt believe it. it still feels like a dream. and i was in the middle of the row, so i had to get through my screaming classmates and make my way down the stairs to recieve my award. i grabbed my trophy and my certificate and a different certificate saying suu scholarship. i gave them my information and walked back up to my class. my friends chance and margot got third for their scene from much ado about nothing, and madeline also got the best junior award and she has the opportunity to go to an actors program at suu. we won first place ensemble, and first place sweepstakes. it was such a great year!!
